EVENING SEPTEMBER 13 1965 Centennial Edition Single Truckloads of Bodies Expect NEW ORLEANS AP Truckloads of bodies from out lying flood areas were expected at the New Orleans coroners office today as the sad method ical proces of gathering the dead from Hurricane Betsy con The quoting a coroners office spokesman said 250 bodies were expected from the parishes of ines and St Bernard which stretch along the Mississippi River south of New Orleans All I know is that we are ex a hell of a lot of bodies a weary official said when asked about the report The coroners office already had more than 50 bodies many unidentified Most drowned in QUEEN FOR A WEEK Mrs Stan Simmons lovely blonde was crowned queen of the Boone Centennial evening at the coronation ball at the Boone Golf and Country club Mrs Simmons will reign overall centennial activities this weekand will appear along with her court of eight princesses at the Boone Story nightly and on the Queens float in the parade Saturday She was the centennial and will reign along with her court of eight princesses over all activities The princesses are Miss Lynne Leininger Miss Susan Duffee Miss Rebecca Good Miss Laura Richeson Miss Connie Mondt Miss Jill Westberg Miss Diana Holmes and Miss Marilyn Erbe Richard Johnson served as master of ceremonies in the names of the princesses and queen Dr H C Erbe chairman and Harlan L Weeks president of the centennial shar ed in duties of crowning the queen George Peterson who chairmaned the queen commit tee and Mrs R William West fall assisted Sunday despite damp weath er hundreds swarmed the streets of Boone looking at win dow displays and attending the open houses of 15 churches On every hand was the comment of the program and how it got started The part women have played in the history of Boone will be marked by pioneer and ladies day on Wednesday in the Boone centennial celebration A buffet luncheon at the Mondt Town House starting at 11 a m which will feature a style show will be one of the features of the day At p m pioneer ladies in the business and professional fields in Boone will be honored at the Grace Episcopal church These women all over 70 years of age will be presented in a brief program There is no charge to this program and the public is invited to attend Cumbers The members of the Brush and Palette club will participate in the Wednesday program with special street demonstrations in painting The club will have a weeklong exhibit just east of Eighth and Story streets in the rear of the Citizens National bank building There is nc charge for this exhibit Some of the items on display at the agriculture day exhibit at the Lincoln Armory on Tues day include a walking plow horse drawn cultiva tor wooden wheeled wagon with doubletree and neck yoke two 12 inch bottom gang plow weaving loom but ter churn and many other items On Tuesday afternoon at 4 p m Mrs Virgil Sturtz will de monstrate the hand loom which was made by her great ther In addition an apple press is expected to be in operation as well as an old coffee mill and a butter making demonstration with the old dasher method The armory will be open Wednesday Thursday and Fri day afternoons between 1 and 5 p m for visitors to see the antique displays There is no charge On Thursday commerce and industry day will be featured with guided tours of several of the major industries in Boone being planned The plants to be toured be tween 1 and 4 p m on Thurs day afternoon are Iowa Electric Light and Power company Quinn Wire and Iron Works Percival Refrigeration Mid state Steel and Merit Baking company The city hall will conduct tours all day Each afternoon of the centen nial at approximately 4 p m there will be a talent show in front of the centennial head quarters with Miss Aline Mar tinek at the organ and other Baton Rouge 85 miles up the Mississipi River where a barge loaded with chlorine was sunk in the river posing a threat of poisonous gas should the barge be punctured The damage toll left by Hurri cane Betsys winds 150 mph near the coast 125 mph However the fall was slow at New Orleans where lowlying areas normally protected by leves and an elaborate pum ping system held flood water like a bowl Officials wouldnt estimate how long it will take One level beside the industri New Orleans and 94 mph at Baton Rouge remained a matter of guesswork with esti schools in the near future the legislature this spring au establishment of as many as 20 area vocational technical schools to be financed by state and federal funds pro perty taxes in the area and stu Home now has made her home in Boone county ever since she was three months old when she was brought here from Davenport by her parents She born in Louisa county Louisa J Smith attended school in and was married to Lawrence M Wahl in 1911 He died on her birth day on Jan 27 1933 Mrs Wahl has one daughter Mrs Leo Naeve and a grand daughter Nancy whose birth day is January 20 Mrs Wahl did dressmaking
