Bowl Speedway in Mesquite for his new documentary Dirt In the Devils Bowl Filmmaker premieres film about Street Stock dirt racing at the USA Film Festival By Glenn Arbery Senior Editor A thoughtful unassuming man Jeff Bowden a former writer for D Magazine does not seem the type to get exercised by the racing scene at the Devils Bowl Speedway in Mesquite His new film Dirt three years in production makes its debut on Sunday night in the USA Film Festival at the Angelika in Mockingbird Station Its a Vivid engaging film about the hardscrabble way of life of people who race stock cars on the dirt track speedway for very little money and very local fame I didnt set out to go do something about racing Mr Bowden said by phone last week What happened was somebody told rne about the Devils Bowl and then I met a few of those people And I thought What he found was a gallery of personalities as vivid and distinct as pilgrims He decided to film the 2002 season of street stock the lowest class in dirt racing itself the least prestigious of automotive competitions NASCAR literally comes from dirt The Daytona 500 was originally on dirt The back straightaway was on the beach said Mr Bowden NASCAR really comes out of the outlaw moonshiner culture Those original driv ers were bootleggers The genius of it was that had these souped up cars but you couldnt tell it they used stock cars Its that kind of car that class that has fascinated Mr Bowden now for years because the people who do it wear no disguises From the 30 Or more regu lars who raced at Mesquite in the 2002 season April to Mr Bowden and his crew selected a dozen or so filming hundreds of hours of racing with frequent ventures into the homes and weekday workplaces of the major characters What Mr Bowden found See DIRT Teardown Fix Residents energized to preserve the look of the neighborhood By Peter Simek Staff Writer Devonshire residents are expressing disappointment with the new city plan for allowing a majority of resi dents on as small an area as one block to impose tions on new construction Most in attendance at the April 12 Devonshire Neighborhood Association meeting said the new stabi overlay plan which awaits approval by the city takes too long to get into effect when it only forces restrictions for one year Its clearly an issue of great interest for area residents association president Patti Miller thats changing the look of the neighborhood Devonshire resident Alexa Griffen typified the sense of urgency felt by those who attended the meeting I got all upset about this months ago Ms Griffen said
