before going door to door with their messages Staff Writer The City Council District 14 race is the most expensive in Dallas history according to campaign finance reports filed in January With Veletta Lill leaving the council because of term limits the race to fill her seat has become increasingly tive Candy Marcum led all can finance report with raised for her campaign before Jan 1 This amount dwarfed the con received by the Candy Marcum Angela Hunt Kathy Ingle PO Sterling other three candidates Angela Hunt raised Kathy Ingle raised and RD Sterling raised only Mr Sterling claims his fund raising has increased substan since the January report He said he may soon announce a major contribution that will close gap between himself and the other candidates Im starting to get ed contributions Mr Sterling said I have a major high pro file contributor lined up but I cant say who it is yet Mr Sterling said he expects the donation to exceed an amount that would him more financial is the season when school escalates to a fever pitch February March and April are hot months for auction parties that raise money for schools both public and pri vate Large auctions net to and in exception al years even more raising money for scholarships build ings equipment and teacher endowments If youre a parent of a child chances are youre a working on an auc tion b recovering from your auction c scoping out friends auctions for ideas to build on next year or d all of the above In most schools the auction falls under the domain of the parents association Often hundreds of parents are Episcopal School painting for their schools auction building activity a way parents can get involved with and sup port the school said David Dini assistant headmaster for external affairs of St Marks School of Texas I think the drive for most people is the feeling of imme knowing youre making an impact said Julia Jewell one local mom The camaraderie of working on a large group event in the typical year it takes to produce an auction is also a big part of the attraction for parents Our gala is the Parents Association only fundraiser during the year so a commit tee of creative volunteers work yearround to plan one evening of fun said Laura Stockdale president of Parish Episcopal Schools Parents Association Its almost like Christmas after its over we have to wait all year before ifs that own solution By Jessica Hoover Staff Writer Since the Texas House has wrapped up its proposals for school finance reform and state senators have started to debate the issue ifs clear that there are vast differences in opinions on what needs to be done The Committee Substitute for House 2 or allocates funding for schools by decreasing the state proper ty tax cap and placing a cent limit on what the state can recapture from school districts Supporters claim it would bring an additional billion into public schools next year House 3 which is contin gent on is an appropria tions that increases fran chise and cigarette taxes to bring money back to the state Both bills were passed in the Texas House two weeks ago and are moving to the Senate for approval Both have also caused senators to start ques how much businesses should be taxed who should carry the bulk of the tax bur den and whether the bills are adequate Rep Tony Goolsby R Dallas said legislators were focused on replacing the school finance system known as Robin Hood through which property wealthy dis send a portion of their property tax funds to the state to be distributed to property poor districts constituents wanted FINANCE on Page 8 A Family Plants Deep Roots Three generations call home By Leah Shafer Contributing Writer When Lois moved to more than 30 years ago she had no idea she would be the first of three gen to call the neighbor hood home I had just gotten married and we bought a little house in 1967 on but imme I got pregnant and that just wasnt large enough so we bought this one she said sit ting in the modern living room of her home My late husband Parker was an architect and we decided we would redo the house The day we were putting the beams up in the main room Micheau was born The friendliness of the neighbors upon her daughters birth was one of the first indi cations that she would stick around We have a wonderful neigh ifs really friendly she said If a new baby is born everybody pitches in and helps When her mother Minnie Thomas wanted to move from Garland 16 years ago was an easy choice She wanted to be closer to one of her children and she had a great little house on Purdue said Mrs Folse Alford Ms Thomas who turned 100 last week lived in that house for a decade before moving to a nursing home six years ago The youngest of the three women Micheau Jaderlund now 36 moved to the area after she got married Ive always loved it and was PHOTO LEAH SHAFER ALL IN THE FAMILY Minnie Thomas daughter Lois Folse Alford and granddaughter Micheau Jaderlund born here Mrs Jaderlund said I went to Hockaday for 13 years and lived here so a lot of my friends are here or in the Park Cities and I love the feel with big lots and lots of trees When she married eight years ago she and her husband David Jaderlund found a Charles house just a block away from her mother It was a little rundown and some of the windows were boarded up but structurally it was great every room has beams and brick floors she said In addition to her mother and grandmothers experi ences with the neighborhood Mrs Jaderlund said the families living around her influenced her choice of home One thing
