1 astronauts today rehearsed the critical first two days of their mission It is dur ing those two days that they will try to save their damaged space station A space official said it would be nip and tuck and a deci sion on whether to launch Fri day wont be made until Thurs day COOL IT In simulators and in confer ences at the Johnson Space Center at Houston Tex the three astronauts worked on procedures for freeing a Skylab solar panel and for erecting a gold and white sunshade to cool down the laboratory which has been orbiting for a week A tentative flight plan calls for an astronaut on the first day in space to lean out the hatch of the Apollo ferry ship and attempt to dislodge at least one of two so lar panels that might be jammed On the second day after docking with the orbiting labo the three astronauts would try to deploy a giant shade to cool down the sun baked craft and protect it from solar heal The favored method is to push an device through an opening from inside the workshop If this is not pos sible a space walk deployment of a separate shield will be at tempted If the shade can be erected the space agency believes there is a good chance astronauts Charles Conrad Jr Dr Joseph Kerwin and Paul J Weitz can carry out a full 28day mis sion But medical scientific and earth resources ex will have to be cur tailed BUSY BUSY Activity today now that most work on the sun the 85ton labo of its at believed to have been polluted with potentially deadly gases discharged by hot foam plastic insulation in the cabin In case some pockets of toxic gas remain the astronauts will cany gas masks and sniffing devices like those used by min ers If gas is detected addition al purges will be necessary Average temperatures inside the overheated workshop the main section of the station climbed from 105 to 115 degrees Sunday SWIMMING After working today in simu lators at Johnson Space Center Houston the astronauts fly to Alabamas Marshall Center to rehearse the two space walk deployments in a giant water tank which contains fullscale models of the Skylab and the Apollo ferry ship By swimming through the exercises the astronauts will experience sensations similar to working
