account Wednesday night of how some of his favors to aide Sherman Adams came to be charged off as busi ness expenses Goldfine a Boston millionaire said favors for Adams including hotel bills were deducted by his accountants as business expenses He said hes willing to adjust his tax returns f the Internal Reve nue Service feels he made a mis take For a score of reporters the launching intended largely for newsreel a frus experience There also was some evidence it was frustrating for a ruddy and gregari man He seemed to want to talk to the one of his lawyers wouldnt let him Presiding over distribute his statement at 8 p m and read it for the newsreels a later When they arrived at 8 they found the story already was in most of their offices because it had been telephoned to the wire services an hour earlier and Goldfine wasnt expected before 9 at the earliest Bottles and canapes were wheeled in and McCrary said the drinks were on Goldfine He smiled bravely when somebody asked into action As Sears steered his client out of the room Goldfine told the hov ering reporters You are all fine gentlemen Benavides Dies Of Gun Wounds Leon Bonavides shot in the leg and stomach early last Fri day died last night in a local hospital Benavides of 901 NW also suffered head injuries in the inci dent at Frontier Lodge Motel on west U S 80 Joe Torres 307 N Bell was charged with assault Aides Named As Gift Recipients WASHINGTON secre tary to Sherman Adams and an aide to Rep McCormack CD Mass were named in House hear ings today as having received Christmas checks from Bernard Goldfine Eugene Kinnaly administrative assistant to McCormack denied to newsmen that he had received a check He said he had received food and fruit as a Christmas gift McCormack is the House Demo cratic leader Goldfine in the witness chair of a House investigating committee of 37 names counsel said was given a list which committee came from incontrovertible proof that Goldfine had made payments to federal employes in both the present and past administrations Goldfine pictured these as to 50 Christmas gifts to some of the poor workers in the White House and at the Capitol Goldfine said if thats bad Id like to be told about it Then the Boston industrialist and friend of Adams No 1 aide o President Eisenhower fied one of the 37 as Kinnaly Goldfine said that was the first name on the list Rep Peter F Mack said another name on the list was a secretary to Adams named Laura G Sherman DENIES LINK But he denied a suggestion that may explain the mysterious dis position of threequarters of a mil lion dollars He refused to give House in his records on the of checks drawn on funds of his enterprises but never cashed said he had Kinnaly for many years known Robert W Lishman counsel for House subcommittee investi gating relations with Adams and with other officials a 1 federal agencies handed the list of 37 names to Goldfine Lish man asked him to identify the persons Lishman said he was to find out what happened to three quarters of a million dollars worth of Goldfine company checks that remain outstanding and still un over a long period of time We have records subpoenaed from the Pilgrim Trust Co of Lishman said incon proof that Mr Gold fine made it apparently a prac tice to have treasurers checks purchased which he used for pay ments to various employes both past and present in the White House and on the Hill The Hill was a reference to Congress coming from Capitol Hill TOO BASHFUL Lishman then handed the list of 37 names to Goldfine saying the checks may have gone to employes who may have beer too bashful toget them cashed Goldfine rM not immediately identify any one on the list pub except Kinnaly But he protested that only a small portion of the checks rep resented payments to federal of lie records on declined the full to produce amount as Lishman sought Goldfine contended that the checks were not relevant to the stated aim of the subcommittees check on how federal regulatory agencies are following the Jaw Lishman questioned Goldfine on his understanding of the differ ence between a treasurers check drawn against a bank and an ordinary personal check Is it not a fact Lishman asked that a treasurers check is purchased in the name of the person that is to receive it and masks the identity of the person who gives the check Goldfine disagreed
