Holy Land You will find renl interest in these title Pastor in The Holy Land Clip and save them STARTING TODAY Space Situation Is Critical Need For Better Protection Is Vitally Important This is the first of a series of articles which will appear Ibis week to give information on the proposition of a new courthouse for Howard County This proposition will be decided at the polls on Saturday May Need is due primary consideration when anyone attempts to reach a decision on a major construction proposal In the case of the Howard county courthouse it is doubtful that more than a few would take issue on this specific factor Vet it is doubtful that more than a small portion of the countys citizens realize exactly how serious problems have become in the present courthouse building Some of them were pointed out by Ihc January grand jury which especially in the district courtroom give the public a firsthand view of what has happened to the old building Although they are among the more serious the clerks and tax offices represent only a small part of the space problems in the old building offices have seen their requirements multiply just as the county population has since 1908 the year the present building was constructed Efficiency of the courts is restrained to an alarming degree because of inadequate space There is only one court room for three courts district county and justice The State of Texas recognized the increased requirements upon the district court nearly two years ago At that time a new district was created by splitting the old 70th district That enables Howard county to have district court continuously except for By JOHN M HIGHTOWER WASHINGTON May 5 Truman policies in the Far East are faced with a twofold test In the Senate hearing room in Wash ington and on the battlefields of Korea And a showdown could come sooner on the battlefields than in Congress The administration argument has been that if the war is limited to Korea and the Chinese Reds se verely punished there an accepta ble peace may be reached The next week or two may tell At issue is the question whether President Truman can obtain lar support to make his policies stick or whether he will have to adopt some of General Douglas proposals What is happening in Korea is followed in the top levels of the administration with the keenest in terest It was summed up by Lt Gen Matthew B Ridgway MacAr thurs successor He said that so far the only thing the tremendous Communist offensive had accom was the destruction of tens oi thousands more of their own men Red casualties since April 22 are estimated at more than EO 000 That heavy damage to the enemy was what the President and his ad visors had expected They had hop ed too that when the Chinese Com have been hurt badly enough they will sit down at a con ference table and make a settle ment acceptable to the UN If it does not occur General Mac Arthur and his advocates may that the administrations hopes are without basis It seems logical that a quick con elusion to the fighting would worl to the Presidents benefit and over shadow the great debate here while indefinite warfare woul make it harder for the President 1 reject all of proposals That the administration has bee preparing the ground for a ceas fire and negotiated settlement probably along the line of the parallel is suggested by officia comment on the Korean conflict There is no longer on the rations side any talk of H triump in Korea The key phrase was use by President in his speech on Mac Arthurs dismissal April II when h spoke of trying to bring the wa to a speedy and successful conclu ion Secretary of State Acheson sed the phrase successful condit ion in a recent speech General MacArthur by contrast as spoken of victory as the only inspected the building The grand jurors emphasized problems in the brief periods when sessions arc held in Stanton and Garden City But offices of the county clerk district clerk the court room tax assessor collectors office and general sanitation deficiencies in both the main courthouse building and the county jail Records kept by the county clerk and district clerk are of vital importance to all citizens of the county and to all persons who own property in the county regardless of where they live Storage space for records on such items as deeds births deaths and cases tried in the courts has been virtually exhausted The safety of such space available is open to question especially in case of fire the county has provided less and worse facilities than it had back in the days when court was in session here for only a few weeks each year And now these facilities must be shared with the county and justice courts because their space was ong since claimed for offices The space situation in the courthouse building alone could be called critical but the main building does not cover the problem There are several offices which should be located in the building but are quartered elsewhere simply because there is no room in the courthouse Among these are the extension service agents the Production and In the ax collectors office there can be no pretense of fireproofing Marketing Association the Highway patrol he county welfare office under present conditions As for general safety of the entire building inspection by profes engineers resulted in reports of serious structural deficiencies the county engineers office the county library and survey ors office At present the county is keeping up two other buildings and renting and recommendations that he old building be replaced or extensively stilt another to accommodate agencies repaired Huge in brick at various points ic the The plans for a proposed new building provide adequate space for them proper military objective te the rean fighting He has severely crit the administration for not following what he consider de line of action aimed at bringing the fighting to victorious end US Gefs Choice By DON WHITEHEAD WASHINGTON May 5 ral of the Army Douglas MacAr nur has laid before the American eople the clearcut choice of fol owing the Truman administration following General MacArthur In essence this Is the great issue hat has emerged from the gener ils three days of testimony before Senators who are looking into the reasons for his ouster by President Truman Both MacArthur and the adminis ration are planning to carry the ight to the nation President Truman has asked the people not to make up their minds intil all the facts are known And MacArthur has disclosed that he is Manning to carry on the hrough a series of speeches prob ably starting with an address to a Joint Session of the Texas ture The choices are 1 Accept the MacArthur plan to beat Red China into surrender by bombing a naval the use of Chinese Nationalist troops and the use of few more can ground troops In Korea The risk of Russia coming into the war must be taken MacArthur says He warned that communism al ready has begun an armed attack on the free world and If you dont meet it in Korea you are doomed to destruction He argued a vic tory in Korea is the best way forestall a surprise atomic attack on this that commu nism must be opposed all over world wherever it is 2 Accept the administration plan the war to Korea on the theory that Allied forces event will make the war so costly the Chinese will be forced to cue for peace The administration does not want to take the risk of draw ing Russia into the conflict There it is AH the other argu ments pale into fuzzy outline when placed against this basic disagree ment on the best way to win a war The general has wag See CHOICE Pg 7 Col 1 Special Events Are Added To Dollar Day Significance Special events during May such as Mothers Day and Graduation add special
