Miss Duwe goes to Walnut and in her place is also a new In the high school only of the teachers of last year will be Misses Temple and But there will be a third who has been in the schools Miss Erickson hav ing been principal of the high school during the year of 1902 In addition to these will be Misses Baldwin and Lewis who will begin work in the At Both are ladies of ex and will find the work they have to do much the same as that which they have been The board have tried conscientious ly to secure good teachers for the places they had to In the princi of the west side building made vacant by the marriage of Miss Jones they have placed Miss Byrde a teacher of several years successful She comes with excellent recommend The schools are beginning a little earlier than has been the custom in the past and it is likely that the at tendance will not be quite up to nor mal on the start from the fact that many of the especially those in the high school are employed in the canning But it was thought better that this should be done rather than to carry the work so far into the The high school course has been broadened to some In the eleventh and twelfth grades there is now an opportunity to work along There is to be one years work in book keeping and one half years work in commercial law and commercial geo Neither of these branches can be taken the pupil has completed the work of the tenth which in cludes two years in The commercial work may be substituted for language in the lafat two During the vacation the buildings have been repaired inside and out and permanent walks have been laid in front of the east and central build Nothing has been done as yet toward making connections with the sewer system and it is not likely that this will be done until another In the matter of looking after those children who come within the scope of the compulsory education the board have hired a special officer for that purpose who will be on the look out for any who be out of By an amendment to the law last winter the time was made four months and the school work is to commence with the beginning of the school It is the Intention of the board to see that the provisions of the law are complied with in every Following is a complete list of the teachers for the year er with the rooms in which they will be found at HIGH SCHOOL Martina Math am a tics Anna Civics and concerned about the coming of the frost at best is not far away Only since 1894 has the frost king remained out of his domain until after the first of The first time was that year and the other as in when he did not come till fter there had been a heavy snow torm along about the twentieth of e Usually the first of October sees the orn field marked by the remembrance his earlier though It often that he does not reach the until about the time of the full The weather department notes two inda of frosts the first being any rost no matter however This Dually proceeds the other which is as a Killing frost which comes rom two weeks to a month With but one exception during the ast ten years September has seen ome In 1894 there was no rost at all during of The following shows the mes of the first frost and also of the illing First Frost wo Ladles Had Placet on tke Library After long months of crimination nd recrimination the contest over ho should be the members of the brary board was settled Tuesday vening by the confirming of the ames of Miss Temple and of This is the sixth time the names had Men proposed to the city council and that evening they had been voted own by a majority of one Some me ago Councilman Johnson had to the that if he would two of the ladles and ole he would vote with the other hree members and bring the matter to Up to last Tuesday night he mayor did not see but he seems o have concluded that half a loaf was letter than none and so made the as Those in favor were Hynes and Opposed were Burnea and This la supposed to mark the close f one of the most stubbornly main contests that the city legislators ave had for many a By the action of Tuesday night there are now wo ladles on the board which Is not y any means an unusual It is that there has been so iuch disturbance over the matter and lat so much feeling has been engen 894 895 895 897 898 899 JOO 901 902 903 Killing Froat 18 23 27 6 20 19 20 8 17 11 13 14 17 17 9 12 16 With this as a basis it will be seen hat the average time for a killing rost the last ten years has been It will also be seen lat during that time there have been nly two years that the frost has held IT past that date and the lateness of rost on those two years was almost However that consti utes of the time and should hold off this year It would mean iore than CROP For ending Des The past week was slightly cooler lan the daily average tempera ure being 1 to 2 degrees below nor The state was copiously watered all which will insure ample all pasturage and put the soil in good for Some local amage resulted from severe wind but the aggregate of loss will ot be The bulk of the corn was prostrated came up quick with favorable conditions follow ng the As a whole the corn rop has done fairly well during the The progress of the crop toward maturity has been more uneven than usual in the same and In the ame Reports from all sources the previous statement that wo thirds or more of the corn crop will need attended the funeral and the pleasantness of the day the services were held on the beautiful lawn In front of the The Fall The effort la being made to have a Fall in Atlantic this There Is a Valid reason why it should not be But that la true with many In but few instances do we find any kind of an enterprise that has no objectional features about By objectional features is meant no reasons why it should not It does not mean something wrong in The festival as planned by the com who worked out its scheme is as free from anything that la wrong morally as it seemed to them possible to make Practically every one of the business men felt that there had been enough of the license that has been a part of some of car On that account they were conscientiously opposed to them and stated their opinions frankly and The only question at issue now is does the best interests demand that something should be done to bring the people to Atlantic and as the festival is planned the best means of doing On both these points there la some thing of a difference of It is practically true that the majority of merchants believe that At should do something to get the It Is also true that from the standpoint of its moral effect the merchants are a unit in the idea that the festival as planned is what it should There are some who believe that the plans cannot be carried out For all these every one should entertain that respect that Is due all people who have convictions on any subjects and for them the Messenger does hold a high The reason that we have urged are entirely out of place for the moat part in reference to the The expediency of it and the ability to finance are reticent They are the main ques tions of difference now and the oppo sition as the writer sees it is based on that Both of these can not be determined by Experience alone will settle the There is a course that who do not have faith in the wisdom of the plans that might be taken that would meet Lho are in favor of it and at the same time would not place them in a com prising That is those who do not feel that they can afford to contribute fees should be not cen sured because they do Those who can afford it but do DO believe it to he wise business policy to do eo entertain the same On the other hand let those who feel that the thing should be pushed for all that there is in it have a proper respect for honest difference of On the part of all let there be no knocking and whether the scheme succeeds or falls it will not prove a bad thing to the business men them It is true in Atlantic that there are some who are not From one reason or another they do not have what is termed public For them but little or nothing can be The some times to succeed in their selfish But if they really do is a At any rate it is useless to try to do anything with them and the beat way is to pay no attention to them in any way The question ia BOW up to Ihe merchants and men of In another column may be found the report of the committee who were appointed to the tasks of the From that report which did not meet with a aingle objection from the stand point of ita moral tone may be determined what the committee aad believe to be If you endorse it lend a helping If you feel that you cant give anything aay a good word for A united effort along this line will make it a success If the idea ie one that the people
