Atlantic Messenger (Newspaper) - July 14, 1904, Atlantic, Iowa f ME 1864 I NO THE BRICK FACtORY A Profitable Two Million Brick Each SUPERIOR GRADE MANUFACTURED Pint Now With Pull sue Walk and Other Interesting While it is known by the most of the citizens in Atlantic that there is a brick manufacturing plant in the city but few of them realize its importance and value to the The fact that for brick have been manuf ac tured though for a large part of tbe time at something of a loss and also in no very large quantities have led people to think that the industry waa of practically no Such however is not the for the is now doing a business that makes it of positive interest to the The clay for tbe manufacture of the brick is obtained from a hill located directly west of town a few rods north of sixth street across tbe The supply is practically inexhaustible and though millions of brick have been manufactured there is but a very small portion of the supply The clay is of an excellent comes practically to the and it is easily Tbe plant consists of the mill which is equipped with an engine which is used for mixing the hauling It to tbe mill and for making into There are seven drying sheds in which the bricks are taken lor drying preparatory to being placed in the kiln for Each of these sheds has a capacity o The bricks are takea directly from the mill to the sheds and are not dried out of doors as so frequently done in making this kind of The length of time required for them to re main in the dry sheds varies with the weather If it is hot and dryas it has been during part of but six or seven days is necessary the weather be rainy threi may be Near to thi are the kilns where the brick These are of two kinds die with what is known as the down draft and the other as the open The down draft kilns are three in num ber of 45 000 and capa The open is now in use has a capacity of At the time of tbe visit of the Messenger re porter all of these were full but the smaller Two were pre paratory to being emptied and the other was A track runs from the mill down in to the clay pit and the cars are hauled up to the dumping box by an endless The cars dump the clay directly into the which is above the so that no handling whatever is re As the clay goes into the mill it is thoroughly ground and forced jn to the which forces the clay into shape under great The clay comes from the mill in a continuous stream in the form of bricks piled up edgewise and laid side by This is a solid stream and it cut into pieces the size of a brick by a wire cutter which cuts three bricks at a These are lifted three at a time onto the palets which when full lifted without touching by hanu onto the barrows on which they are wheeled in to the dry From the time the clay is shoveled into the cars until brick are burned ready for the market they are touched only once by the hands of the makers and this is when they are being lifted from the machine onto the During all the rest of the process except when be ing piled for burning they are handled a large number at a time on the The brick made at the Atlantic plant are of three The poorest grade is a rather soft brick but is suitable for vaults and cistern linning and Is in fact a better brick than many that are sold on the market as a first class The second grade U suitable for foundations and backing in build ing as well as for all inside The best quality Is a very hard brick and is strong and hard enough for sidewalks and street in addition to the regular brick Taylor is making a hollow brick for backing walls in buildings that Is aa good as any on the market for that they are of the of two aud half ordinary brick and when used for the backing in the walls insure both warmth and In with tbe products of other localities his brick rank well with the best there are in the Marson who built the Library building stated to the writer that they were then better than the Omaha Since that time they have been much Taylor expects next season to his plant and also to put in tie machinery for the making of face irick for dwellings and In hie manufacture he needs about 800 tons f coal each requires from ten to sixteen men to the plant n One of the greatest draw acks the plant has to contend with is he lack of railroad With he plant Taylor now has and he cheapness with which he can man brick he could go into the market in tnis vicinity and furnish a arge number of brick for the outside Bur when be has to haul them o the car and handle them twice ex ra it cuts out tne The item of hauling the coal Is also no small ex Altogether tbe industry is of considerable more importance than one would think until he inquires into The plant is owned by About If fowls are closely as must be the case on tbe verage town aboutas much care ill be required in the feeding during be summer as in By all means feed not for a few but every Some feed a mash in the others the same t and still others dry ration I prefer the especially during the Ay experience has been that the egg reduction is fully as with less rouble in feeding and keeping tbe ouses The feed should be in litter of some so a at the fowls will have to work for busy hen is generally a laying leat of some kind should be fed sev ral tines a and green cut bone will be greedily devoured and should lot be Green food should nter largely into their with yster shell and grit and fresh drink WINS THIRTY DOLLAR PRIZE Gardner Writes on the Subject of Summer Care of the Flack and secured Second The Commercial Poultry offered three prizes for the best article on tbe subject of Summer Care of the It was a free for all Gardner who haa been in the bus ness of raising poultry entered along with a large number of others and was surprised to find that he had been successful in securing second place in the contest and that as a result be is the recipient of a check for from the publishers who offered the The following is the article as writ ten by The subject is one on which much may be Methods differ as men and conditions A method that will make for success with one only means fai lure for In the care of the flock one must above everything else use every day common Ii is beyond the power of any writer to give directions that will obtain the best results under all circumstances One must learn to adopt true and tried methods to his particular The Hock on the city lot will require somewhat different method of care from the one on the farm or the large grass runs of the well to do One of the first and most importan essentials is Many think after the warm weather comes and fowls are able to live much in the open the houses need no particular a A sadder mistake was neve The droppings should be r moved frequently and the nest boxe kept inviting by frequent changing o the nest Lime will greatly assist ii keeping the houses sweet and in more habitable and sprinkling of kerosene and carboli acid over the roosts and the same a plied over the entire interior of th building will be found very in keeping down the lice and mites Whitewash to which a quantity of add and kerosene is added als makes an excellent preparation an can be applied with a broom o preferably the Th spray drives the mixture into th and crevices not reached b the brush or The lime an acid are both good and not all agreeable to lice and With a little care and slight cost at the proper and in fact all of the the houses can be kept in the best of condition throughout the The extra trouble will be richly repaid in the better health of the the larger percent of the fertile eggs and the increase in egg Fowls are not slow in remembering extra care applied in the right As to the kind of give your fowls the very best you can They need not be but they should be dry and so that the birds can get in out of rain and If one is living in town and has only a small lot rented it is not generally advisable to spend a large sum of money on the poultry A very cheap house can be erected of cheap lumber and In the fall covered on the interior with tarred or building paper or even If one owns his own whether in town or in the it will be found profitable to erect buildings of a substantial char acter and after modern plans which may be secured from any poultry pub liahing If one contemplates the rearing of many additional coops and houses will be Excellent coops can be made of dry goods boxes covered with tarred Some use but boxes with sloping or even flat roofs are much tobe Care should be taken that these coops are closed at night to keep out as every one knows who has had to do with that once rats and other beats of a like nature get a taste of the tender birds the flock soon dwindles ng water in easy reach at all f the runs are small it will be found beneficial to spade or plow them up so that the birds can wal ow and duet In many where the fowls are closely arded they can be let out in tbe eve a short time before going to when they will pick up much Teen stuff and do practically no damage if herded a Where owls have free range or large grass runs during the the Item of green food will largely look after it but some grain should be Some breeders recommend keeping grain before them at all and I once the fowls become au to the plan is a good Oyster shell and grit and plenty of fresh drinking water should be sup if the range is not animal food of some kind should be fed The rations for both the fowls on the range and those yarded can be made up of mi Kaffir Indian a though the latter should be fed jud during the as it is too Wheat 1 lind the bes While the cost is greater it goes farther and seems more suite to the needs of the Some make the claim that oats are injurious on account of hut I have ye to seo bad effects from feeding then whole as they come from the thresher 1 would not or any other one us i complete ration as greata variety a possible should be Care of the In Inking m the care of the chicks let us go hack to the setting if hatched by artificial the has already been we in regard to the care of the layers and breeders up to the point of Incubation is a subject in itself and should be handled sep although success in roaring the chicks depends largely on the care given tho breeders and the treatment the eggs receive up to aud during the period of The nests should be kept free from lice and mites by tobacco stems in the nest material and dusting the nests and hens with insect powder sev eral times during the period of The heivs should be free to nests and return at If circumstances are such that this is im the hens should be let out to feed and water at least once a 1 find it a good plan to remove them every morning at feeding time and them In again as they go which is generally in a short if the chicks are to be hatched by arti follow the directions that come with the machine unless you are positive that you know better Dont follow every bodys directions have a mind of your own and after you have carefully studied the tions that come with your Incubator use it and be sure to mix in a generous quantity of common After the chicks are out give them no feed for from twenty four to forty eight Sand and and possibly some will be all they will Feed little and often at first and gradually increase as the chicks seem to demand Use some good wholesome Bread crumbs table cracked wheat or corn and animal food in form should be fed several times a Grit and water should of course be kept by As they grow older whole wheat and corn can be The chicks will do better and the tage of loss less if the mother birds are enclosed at least a greater part of the Chicks brooded artificially will re quire about the same care and feed as those left to run with the with the exception that attention will have to be given to keeping them but not so much attention to keeping down the lice and The best re an be placed under cover and pro from the rain and for ess difficulty will be experienced in keeping an even The should be free to go out and in at will and be in the open air as much as Nothing is better for growing chicks than fresh air and The brooders as well as he coops should be cleaned When the chicks are old enough to eave their natural or wooden hey will largely look after themselves on the but in town they will re luire more or less according o the amount of range they can be iven and the purpose for which they are If for the whether on the farm or in they can be quite closely yarded and fed or but this should be done with care or serious results will follow f for they should be given as1 much range as possible and fed to cepp them With the large it has been found a very profitable plan to place the chicks in colony houses and given plenty oi range until time for going into winter OBITUARY Kathbun most of a None save God and her child ren can ever left alone with she struggled to keep her little ones together and to impart to
