all long distance calls made within their own area The change is the first step in making more tele phone prefixes available to meet Iowas growing demand for telecommunications ser With increasing numbers of customers adding lines for computers and FAX ma chines in both businesses and additional lines for business growth and fam ily and expanding lar phone phone companies must constantly add new Iowas new dialing plan was approved last year by the Iowa Utilities Board Work began at that time to reprogram the cations network in Iowa to begin the transition to the dialing The dialing change will be mandatory beginning May and applies to all customers of Iowas 153 telephone compa The new dialing plan will freeup number combinations to be used as either area codes or The ex dialing plan allows Iowa phone companies to continue adding new numbers and lines for The plan is part of a national re scheduled for completion throughout the United States and Canada by January Both residence and busi ness phone users should change speed dialing pro computer FAX call forward alarms and private phone systems to be compatible with the dialing The new dialing plan does not change the way local 911 emergency 411 directory assistance calls or 0 for operator assisted calls are Area codes were added to phone numbers in the late 1940s so customers could use direct long distance dial eliminating the need for operator assistance on most area with either a 0 or 1 as the middle digit were reserved for that specific use and were not permitted for use as the prefix or first three
