Ames Daily Tribune and Evening Times (Newspaper) - September 10, 1929, Ames, Iowa Scanning the News By f F O STORY COUNTYS DAILY The Ames Daily Tribune Found destroyed upon side of a mountain where it had mow ed away giant pine trees before exploding and burning the T A T plane Miss Sun Francisco yielded the bodies of eight passengers and crew bers The aeronautics division of j the United States department of j commerce immediately began an investigation but like hundreds of other tragedies of the air land i and sea the exact cause will ably never be known j Today officials of the T A T Issued a statement from the St Louis office that those eight unfortunates their death in the crash against the mountain side and were ail killed before the gasoline tanks exploded denied that Pilot Stowe was ordered to take off on the j fatal flight against his own better judgment It would be interest ing indeed if Pilot Stowe might have lived to testify what actually happened also for the average laymen to know how officials have been able to determine the exact I moment of death of those eight I people B Defending their business in its hour of disaster the T A T declared This shocking tragedy has not lessened our confidence in the present value of commercial avia tion any more than a railroad or steamship catastrophe can destroy the value of those means of trans We deeply regret that air transport which has made such rapid strides iu the past few j should be afflicted with its j tragedy just as are railroads the seas and the highways A Washington dispatch says j that investigation is made of all commercial aircraft accidents for statistical purposes i But on the same day that dis patch appeared every newspaper I in the country carried reports of wholesale killings along the high ways of this country The nation had celebrated a holiday Two hundred and five persons lay dead Recently an entire family was wiped out when a bus in Texas was struck by a railroad train but not of that accident nor of those wholesale holiday kill ings was there a federal gation even for statistical pur poses Aviation is spectacular Its catastrophes are they are fewer in number than i those in any other field of com transportation It fedj cral investigations are needed in aviation what about thai long list of grade crossing i other motor accidents snuff out thousands of human j lives annually i Those statistics might also be valuable i AND EVENING TIMES WEATHER IOWA Fair and Wednesday not much in temperature VOLUME LXIII Official County Paper AMES IOWA TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 10
