holidays are traditionally a time to relax ever for the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders this holiday season will hardly be the time to kick back Starting Tuesday BG will have to play Marion Center which was last year's District 6 Class AAA and then six days later will have to up for its tournament which features the likes of South Butler and Western from Baltimore which is ranked number four in the country by USA Today The next three games should present the stiffest challenge that Guilfoyle has had to face in the young season and if Saturday night's victory over Swissvale is any indication BG should be able to hold its own in those upcoming games We have three giant tasks in front of said Guilfoyle Coach John Frederick This win was a great lead in because I thought we put our game together On Saturday Guilfoyle totally dominated a Swissvale team that lost just one starter from last year's playoff team We feel we pounded a pretty good team said Frederick 1 think beating a poor team is one thing but beating a respectable team is different and we feel good about it We pounded them on the boards and they are a big added Frederick whose team bounded the Flashes We were careful with the ball We com- mitted only 15 turnovers and forced them to commit 27 With a ratio like that we feel happy Guilfoyle took command of the game from the beginning The Lady Marauders led after the first ter and then increased that margin to 26 points at the half The majority of the problem tor Swissvale was its inability to get its offense untracked We attribute a lot of that to good said Swissvale Coach Greg Smith Many times we got the ball into our big girl but she couldn't make It was great defense so give all the credit to Guilfoyle In the third quarter Swissvale experienced a scoring drought ter hitting a bucket in the opening minutes of the second half the Flashes didn't score again until he opening minutes of the fourth ter In the fourth Swissvale aged just 10 points Meanwhile the Lady Marauders scored 18 and 13 points respectively in the final two quarters We are a few away from admitted Smith This was a good experience for us and hopefully we can profit from One area that Frederick was not pleased with was his team's foul shooting Guilfoyle shot from the line We need to start making our foul shots and improving our inside Frederick said We're still missing easy shots that we shouldn't be GAME BG upped its record to Swissvale is The Lady were led in scoring by Trish Kiley's 15 points while Julie added 13 Gretchen Hess was top scorer with nine Leipold was the high rebounder with 17 Guilfoyle shot 39 per cent from he floor while Swissvale shot 23 per cent Louise Weeze Gates led BG with 5 sists Junior Carroll missed Saturday's game due to a severe bout with the flu She was in the hospital suffering from dehydration Kris Willnecker suffered a head injury in the first quarter but re- turned to action in the second half Sophomores Sandi Clossin 2 and Amy Kauffman 2 scored their first points as varsity players The Guilfoyle jayvees remained un- defeated with a win Kauffman was the high scorer with 16 points Swissvale Hess 4 B Smith 2 6 Connell 1 4 Panek sparks Carroll victory EBENSBURG Bishop Carroll's Sue Panek scored 16 of her 26 points in the third quarter to ignite a point explosion that helped carry the Lady Huskies past Purchase Line in a girls basketball game Saturday night Carroll erased a four-point halftime deficit with a quarter explosion to take a com- manding lead going into the fourth quarter The winners came out of the locker room at halftime and went on a spree to erase Purchase Line's advantage We came out and started playing like we're capable of said Bishop Carroll Coach Deb Yesenosky We were just as flat as a pancake in the first half Panek a junior guard shared scoring honors with Purchase Line's Carla Krolick who was joined in double figures by teammates Sharon Brickell with 14 points and Bethh Fyock with 11 We're getting balanced from Panek in every aspect of her said Yesenosky She's averaging double figures in rebounding as a guard and she's averaging five assists and four steals She's shooting really well too Panek leads Carroll in scoring with a 21.4 average Purchase Line Fyock 1 II Smith 0 0 Krolick 11 26 Brickell 5 14 Peles 1 4 Cassidy 0 0-0 0 0 0-0 0 55 Bishop Carroll Panek 12 26 Mines 3 6
