report CHICAGO Democrat Dick Durbin defeated Republican Al Salvi in the hardfought Senate race Tuesday as Illinoisans delivered their verdict on two years of lican rule in Springfield and Washington I hope this victory tonight is that no political official in this state should ever ever be cowered by the Durbin said hope that this campaign has proven that if you stand with police and with the families in Illinois for sensible gun con trol youll be a Salvi congratulated Durbin saying he can be a senator in the Paul Simon Congressman Durbin ran a fabulous Salvi said ran a good solid oldfashioned 64 percent of precincts reporting Durbin had votes or 59 percent and Salvi had votes or 38 percent The battle between Durbin a advocate and Salvi an apos tle of low taxes and balanced 112th District Illinois House seat With a fourth of the pre counted about 10 Garcia was trailing by a few hundred votes But Bradford with votes liked the trend If things hold for the remainder of the evening there should be no Bradford a 49yearold Glen Carbon attorney said The candidates were bat tling to fill the seat being vacated of Madison and St Clair counties by Dem ocrat Jay Hoffman who was
