and All are in Better Grist of Letters from Popular of Albert Lea's Excelsior Company Chickamauga Park Georgia July 23 the You will notice by the above date line that we are still here m the state of Georgia where we have been since the 19th day of May but the prospects are now that we will be here but a very short time as Porto llico seems to be our destination next Our quartermaster John Lind who is a candidate on the populist democratic and ticket for nor of Minnesota said this afternoon that ws would move in about a week or ten days From the fact that they are drilling us a little more now than heretofore makes me believe too that we are off for some Spanish territory before the month is out although we have had no orders as yet The ity ot the men in our regiment prefer going to Porto now as if they do not go with this expedition the ces are that the next disposition made of the balance of our army would be to Havana Ic is said that our first corps will move as soon as transportation can be secured Four regiments went today and the others will follow them up as soon as arrangements can be made with anu steamship com- panies from what I can learn nearly all the ambulance wagons some doctors and hospital Stewarts have been ordered to leave oat of our division so that the matter of moving commences to look more serious than at any other time From good authority 1 learn that the whole hrst army corps is in- cluded in this expedition The army corps consists of nearly men and taking that large number besides ar- tillery cavalry about horses and mules to say nothing about all sorts of baggage and provisions to feed this army it is no small task and it will take some time to accomplish it Yesterday at 630 m the morning our regiment together with eight others included m our division were ordered out In light marching order which in- cludes rilles haversack canteen tin cup and rubber blankets and shelter tent and were given a march to Snodgrass Hill a distance of four miles and there passed in review be- fore our division commander Gen Sanger As the regiments passed the reviewing stands each of their bands discoursed music adding much to the interest of the scenes First in the march came the first brigade under Gen Wiley followed by the second un- der Gen Waites while Gen Andrews with the third brigade brought up to the rear The lasted an hour and a half and it was one of the greatest sights have witnessed in camp Our company was the second one in the march as we are the second company in the first battalion regiment of the first brigade third division so you see we are pretty well in front The heat was intense and during the review and on the long march quite a few were compelled to fall out of line and the few who were entirely exhausted were picked up by which followed the hue of march Wednesday I was on guard duty at division where I was de- tailed as of the guard While there I met men irom Xew York Pennsylvania and Kentucky regiments and they were very interesting The best of feeling exists between the boys of the northern and southern states they enjoy associating with one another Our rations have been pretty good fur a long time and as good as 1 ex- to it before going into the army They consist of fresh meats one and sometimes two meals every day all the soft bread we can eat coffee sugar salt and pepper and about three times a week have real good soup with dumplings in it and once a week we have potato salad now and then have beans and If we get these same things on which to subsist when we get to Porto Bico we ought to feel happy and thanki ul Men are now detailed to all the water used for drinking purposes and this will undoubtedly to some extent improve the health of the camp as the water here is said to be impregnated with malarial germs 1 learned today at the hospital that there have only been 18 deaths in our division among 10.000 men and this is a small per cent- age considering that all the men had a change of climate and water and in nearly three months time AVe still have the usual amount of drill except on Sundays when we only have inspection of arms and quarters and dress parade in the evening vices now begin at 10 o'clock in the morning and then in the evening each Sunday We are now supplied with a field organ and us more than ever ot our churches and services at home The only thing we miss in the service is the of ladies and sweet voices in the church choir but then we are getting used to that now and get along very well with only male voices The fruits here are just getting ripe This morning I had a peach just plucked from an orchard and they are ine They are going to have a dous crop of fruit here this year and regret that we cannot eat as much as we like of it for the reason that we are forbidden to do so in order to pre- serve health and prevent sickness among the men The physicians are taking every precaution to guard against men eating these fruits and are using every effort to prevent it to be brought into camp The check for 50 sent by the dies of the Norwegian lutheran church will be used principally in buying for the sick and those in the It was very welcome and will ye used to best advantage S OTIS S The STANDARD Has It Camp Thomas July They are organizing a team of to shoot in ti am shoots of regiments There are twelve men to be taken out of thia regiment and I am sure to be one of them There were twenty-eight token out on the range this morning to pick from and they all fell down but a few Lou Louis and I are the next to the highest score so they can't shut us out One fellow f Camp Thomas July the The constant pressure ot military routine prevents my being a more constant correspondent but the STANDARD which is a welcome ly visitor reveals the fact that you are very well supplied with camp news Besides the conditions existing here at the present time are not such as I like to write about The sickness in our regiment seems to be increasing rather than otherwise The same may be said with reference to the 5th Penn encamped immediately north of us No one seems to be to account for these conditions and when we er that Minn is constantly winning compliments with reference to the fine physique ot iU seems doubly strange we should be the tims instead of weaker men This morning I had 25 men on my sick report that is of my company Some suffering from minor ailments of course but others very sick The surgeons evidently do all they can but if they cannot do enough or have not the means to take care of the sick then sufficient means should be supplied I have now nine men in the hospital At times the hospital is full and when that condition exists I have to make the best arrangement possible in the company street for the care of men A sick man cannot thrive on army rations no matter what kind of a stomach he has Last week I secured a leave of ab- sence for my quartermaster prank Rogers He took about 340 with him and accompanied by Mrs Edwards went to Chattanooga to purchase of supplies for our sick consisting of crackers wafers cocoa canned soup and such other articles as Mrs E might suggest So that now instead of trusting entirely to the hospital corps we are running an institution of our own and caring for bovs to the best of our ability 1 believe one of the wisest things I ever did in my life was to appoint Prank Rogers my quartermaster He is a and is so good-natured that he is ways ready to help me in everything I have read of the action of the board of county commissioners and have been notified of their kindness with reference to aiding company I Their generosity strikes a chord in the heart of every one of us and their kindness and readiness to assist us has done more to cheer and encourage us than anything else We know their action reflects the sentiments ot the people of county and the boys of company I want these same people to be proud of them Knowing the desires which prompted the action of the board I wish to say I shall not hesitate when occasion de- mands to draw on that fund for the comfort of the company I wish also to take this opportunity to thank all our friends who through their kindness have generously contributed to our needs We are all feeling somewhat aged over the report that we are to go Porto Eico If we could only move anywhere we would be satisfied and the excitement of moving would I think revive many of us Mrs E is doing very nicely and at present ing good health except that it worries her very much to see so much sickness The weather is anything but ful although the nights are quite en- durable The work is very laborious and were it not for the fact that I know it would worry my wife I would be sick myself I have no time from a m till evening but am kept con- stantly at work and have a thousand things to do 1 am chairman of two boards of survey and must set the time for meetings so as not to conflict with our regular routine still I cannot com- plain for my health remains lent Many of our sick have recovered but others have taken their places It may be when each has served his turn that we will have no more illness C S Camp Thomas July the We are all feeling nicely at present with the exception of eight of the boys who are in the hospital and about the same number assigned to quarters Those that are in the tal are nowise dangerously ill except Geo Briggs and at this writing he is improving We all hope they will soon be out among the boys again Last week was an exception with those on the sick list company I has dropped off at least ten in the last few days and they seem to be in better spunk than before We try and do the best we can with those who are sick but it seems impossible to give them the care that they would get if at home but the boys are all very patient and complain but little We are having at mess soups of different varieties wafer crackers cocoa tea and a tew other articles Last Wednesday Mrs Capt Edwards and myself went to Chattanooga and purchased 827 worth of goods tor the sick Saturday the government issued wa- ter filters to each company so now the water is all filtered before drinking and it is surprising to see how clear it leaves it All water is forbidden to be drank without boiling We get all the fresh bread we can eat in fact a great deal more Each man is entitled to loaf per day and we hardly ever draw over seventy-five loaves per day We get plenty of fresh beef and the boya seem to get tired of it and we have the pork for a meal or so Our first issue of new potatoes was given out last Friday they were quite good but rather small We also got quite a change in the line of 100 pounds of was issued by the government It was devoured very quickly by the boys Of course this tood is all vary good for a man m good health but a sick man cannot eat id So I think the bulk of the money that the good people ot Albert Lea and county sends us will be spent m caring for the sick Yesterday 1 received a check of from Mrs Chris B Jelstrup donated by the ladies of Eev church for the benefit of company I and we are all very thankful to them tor their kindness Our first lieutenant has not been feeling well the past few davs but is about all right again only missed a few drills Harry Gillrup and Bob Tweedy are all right again also Halvorsen is back again on duty We have had considerable rain the last few days and it keeps the air cool The corn crop down here looks well but it 13 no farther ahead than in sota at this season of the year Gram has been stacked the last three weeks or more and the other day we could hear the old familiar sound of the threshing machine and it was certainly a treat to hear something to remind one of what will soon be going on at the country homes of county The threshing down here will be a small job for it is a long distance be- tween settings I doubt if you could Qnd a job of threshing in the state of Georgia like our neighbor's Wm Goek has They have a fine crop of peaches here and they are large 1 have not seen a patch of potatoes over one- half acre large yet It seems that the people here do not eat potatoes much ana they scarcely ever bake bread only biscuits three times a day I don't see what they feed their stock an in the winter for I have not seen a good hav meadow yet it is raining this afternoon and re- call has just sounded for no drill and the boys are not sorry at all for they put in two good hours drilling this morning f F Camp Thomas July I bave jeen serving Uncle Sam three months oday or rather making the best at- tempt that the opportunity would ow to do so and am free to confess it las been the longest three months of By life And yet the experience has been a revelation aud wonderful and valuable in many respects and one which I certainly never expected it to be my lot to enjoy It looks very much as though we would never be favored with a chance be called out of the country and while we are all greatly disappointed and chagrined especially when we con- sider the hard work we have done to it ourselves for efficient duty perhaps t is for the best that we are not to be called into sterner service There is yet however a remote possibility that ve may be sent to Bico or sibly later an to Cuba or to some other point in this country and it scarcely need be said that we earnestly long for a chance to show that we can do thing besides pass in for- ward guide or perform other drill or display maneuvers Gen Sanger our division commander s very confident that our regiment will be moved to some other point We now have a request on file with Gen Wade the present commander of this anny for a change of our camp here to Hill near Lytle a much nore healthful and otherwise desirable and theie is a good prospect it will be granted The 1st South Carolina regiment left ast night for Jacksonville where it will be under the command of Gen 1 Lee and its place in our gade has been taken by the 12th lork the somewhat distinguished Bowery regiment The South Carolina regiment is greatly lacking in ciency in drill and other military re- but it is commanded by Jol Tillman a son of the senator and hus may have had the advantage of a moving influence that we do not possess CARLYLE H DAY Kicks Against Their Dura Luck We lowed as how we'd go to war Auri have a with Spain Arid kill some dura Spaniards That helped to sink the Maine First they took us way up north A place they called Camp Kamsey Theu away down south we went Say but that wuz mighty dandy When we wiu hustled off the cars Amid the cheers aud smiles Our hearts they durn near busted For we had to march twelve miles The boys kept up their courage They didn't make no roar They thought of why they wuz marching Aud some they wanted more Soon we reached Camp Thomas it wuz swell at first Had a drink of colfee And a few cold We've been here now past two months Don't sea no of From this infected camp of ours For peace they say Spain's sueing If they'd give us half a chance We'd eare not one To record established here By the brave twelfth Minnesota Camp Thomas July
