83.00 a day and that is tbe lowest paid to anyone Jf course there are many idle men in that is bound to be the case where there is a large number of men employed and tbe wages the highest paid in the United States Butte's population is made up of all classes and nationalities and I believe every nation is represented here Of the foreigners the Irish and are in the lead as far as numbers are concerned In he Anaconda county's mines you will ind mostly all Irish foremen bosses and miners and in the Boston Montana Boston mines they are all mostly cousin jacks You would naturally think that at the high rate of wages here would make living very high but it does not as you can get a flue meal for two bits and there are about half a dozen places where one can get a very fair meal for 15 cents it will be on par with some of the two-bit meals you get in Albert Lea if not a little better House and store rents are somewhat high a few years ago a store 30 foot front by 100 Feet deep would rent for 8300 per month now the same place rents for A three-room house with water 81.50 rents fer about 918 per month and larger houses increases about 85 The pay rolls of the mines etc amount to over a month and when that money is put into tion it is bound to make things pretty lively and for its size there ia not an- other city in the world that can com- pare with it Here instead of finding ittle jim crow stores with shoddy goods you can see stores that would be a credit to any of the largest cities in the east and everything is up-to-date We have the styles here nearly as soon as they have them in New York Butte is not much of a summer or winter resort and the taxpayer is not troubled with paying taxes for the keeping of beautiful parks as we have none and the poor tired man in trie summer time or wintertime when he gets home from his day's toil is not troubled with having to push a lawn mower as we are shy of lawns with the exception of a few hot houses The reason we have not a tree and verv few lawns m Butte is that the sulphur from the the smelters sometimes tles tbe city and trees and grass do not seem to do very well under its soothing influence and pine away and die Butte is strictly a mining smelling town and we claim nothing more for it and at some future day if the leaders of the would care to know something about the mines and some of their underground
