writer Although Dr Larry Brede was named 2003 Volunteer of the Year at the United Way of Aiken County Annual Meet ing and Awards Dinner he is more honored by the oppor to serve the people of Aiken for over 11 years The distinction really goes to all of the teers said Brede I look at the United Way as a big force in the commu with a lot of capable people with love for others it is an honor to be a part Brede began serving as a board member in 1993 and was chair of the board of directors hi 2003 Dr Connie Pritchard was named the chair of the board for 2004 We have made excellent strides in community impact and we are really seeing some of the results said Pritchard who notes that last year was a difficult eco nomic year As we are mov ing forward we hope we cart run the best campaign we can Joe Lewis was named the 2004 campaign chair and Dee Stanford president of the United Way of Aiken County hopes the community will continue to make the organi a success through their support Last year was a very tough year and 2004 is not going to be easy but we are going to do our best and I know that the community will no doubt come through again said Stanford We provide funding to over 60 programs in 63 agen cies without their support and contributions those services would not be avail able and there would be a lot of people in the community that would really be hurt See HONORS page 6A Meeting and Awards Dinner on Tuesday Wednesday March 102004 Welch resigns Basketball coach at two year school steps down after career By LARRY TAYLOR Sports Editor Saying he was spread too thin Charles Welch has resigned as head basketball coach at Aiken Technical College following a highly successful career The 44 yearold Welch who started the basketball program from scratch in 1991 will continue to teach math and fitness classes at the school In my heart of hearts Im a teacher Im not really excited about being a mediocre teacher said Welch who receives a stipend for coaching but whose primary income comes from teaching The thing it comes down I have to feel like fin everything at a high level and I just feel like Im spread too thin They pay me here to teach and I dont think Ive done a really good job in the classroom the last two years Welchs resignation as coach is effective June 30 The things important to me are coaching teaching and my family I get paid to teach and Im not going to leave my wife said Welch who has two child ren Rebecca 14 and Mat thew 9 Something had to give Hired by former ATC president Paul Blowers in 1991 Welch led the Knights to seven Region 10 tourna ment championships and four appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association Divi sion n national tourna ment In all likelihood Ill be teaching here next year It would have to be a great job where all I have to do is just poach not coach and teach Welch said I do love to coach I like to think that at some point that coaching is in my future He began his coaching career as a graduate assis tant at Georgia Southern in 1985 before taking a job as an assistant at USC Aiken under Larry Epperly in See COACH page 6A Guardsmen returning to area Thursday Preparations under way for celebration ceremonies By ROB NOVIT Staff writer The 122nd Engineer Bat talion will return home for good Thursday welcomed by celebrations in Edgefield and Graniteville The 300member unit which has served in Iraq for the past year will be hon ored at Strom Thurmond High School at approximate ly 1 pm Those with Charlie Com pany in Graniteville will be recognized at a ceremony at that National Guard Armory at about pm The guardsmen who have been working on ture repair and upgrades in Iraq arrived for an emotion al reunion with their family members at Ft Stewart Ga last Thursday After a few hours of leave time the guardsmen report ed back for a week of pro cessing procedures lab work and physicals and informa tion on the adjustment of returning to civilian life with their families Paula Scott the girlfriend of guardsman Bryan Baker said that SC Sen Tommy Moore and Rev Steven Hendrix of Graniteville First Baptist Church will participate in the ceremony The Aiken County Home School Band will perform and the Marine Corps League will present the col ors The Midland Valley Naval Junior ROTC cadets and members of the Blue Star Group of Aiken were to help decorate the armory today In a news release Maj Gen Stan Spears the SC adjutant general described the 122nd as a highly deco rated unit performing essential missions and play ing a vital role in the Presi dents War on Terrorism
