tax revamp By RODDIE BURRIS AUGUSTA Tons of alu spent nuclear fuels from foreign and domestic reac tors are earmarked for delivery to the Savannah River Site over the next couple of decades Right now the government is in the midst of a broad technologi cal search for the best way to han dle it Interim storage will be done at Savannah River Site and it will stay here until a repository is opened in 1015 years Dr Kevin D Crowley a staffer for the National Academy of Sciences explained Tuesday Realistically depending upon the rate of progress on a federal repository and the prevailing political climate in years to come the materials could stay at SRS much longer That means that the Depart ment of Energy which takes own of the 27000 or so fuel ele ments in question must devise a safer more cost effective method of storage than is currently in use The current technology is to store the spent nuclear fuel cells underwater in huge concrete vaults But the DOE must also develop suitable treatment and packaging options for the spent fuel ele Interim storage will be done at Savannah River Site until a repository is opened in 1015 years Dr Kevin Crowley ments rendering them road ready
