Corps Band delivered its military music magic Monday evening making its contribution to the Hopeland Gardens Summer Concert Series rain clouds threatened the show and forced organizers to move into the H Odell Weeks Activities Center but the capacity crowd still got 90 minutes of solid enjoyment as the leathernecks put their percussion woodwinds and brass skills to the test Tunes ranged from military and patriot ic classics such as a medley of the armed forces themes to such contemporary work as a collection from Andrew Lloyd Webers Phantom of the Opera The buildings security system put on a show as well during the first five minutes An earpiercing alarm went off during the Marines rendition of When Johnny Comes Marching Home and whooped for a full minute before being shut off The musicians never missed a beat and Johnny marched successfully home trig gering loud applause and cheers from the crowd The band has been coming to Aiken for the entire 25year span of the concert series and Sgt Matthew Farquhar from Woodstock Ga said the annual trip is a pleasure These are some of the most outstanding people weve played for all year and hon estly this is one of the concerts that the band really truly looks forward to playing for he said It was a good audience added Sgt Ver non Harris a Jacksonville Fla native who played percussion and trombone and said his groups coverage ranges from south central Florida to New York and Massa Another show is set for Chicago in two weeks We perform probably about four times a week added Sgt Greg Whittaker also from Jacksonville He delighted the crowd with his alternately soaring squealing and Teenager faces trial as adult murderer of Carlton Ennis may face the death penalty By CARL LANGLEY An Aiken County domestic court judge ruled Monday that a 15yearold arrested in the June 23 slaying of businessman Carlton Ennis can be tried as an adult Deputy Solicitor Lawrence Brown released the information about Judge Peter rul ing on Kai Wang one of three arrested in the slaying Brown said Wang whose last known address was Charlotte was locked up in a state juvenile detention facility after his extra dition from North Carolina Solicitor Barbara Morgan said murder indictments will be sought against Wang Curtis Bruce Kesl 19 and Ae 16 The solicitor said she was pleased about the decision because prosecutors can treat Wang as an adult Ms Morgan did not go into specifics especially the speed with which the arrests were made but her comments indicat ed she may seek the death penalty In a case like this where we are contemplating a death penal ty it is not appropriate for me to comment on factual matters she said Kesl and Wang were arrested in Charlotte two days after Ennis was shot in his southside pawn shop and video poker parlor Friends said Ennis expected to become a holdup victim at some point but the killing shocked family members and neighbors on the south side Dewey Ennis the Lauryn Hutto who stayed alongside her family on a picnic blanket in the front row entertaining her neighbors by dancing through the entire show Her mother Anna Laura Hutto explained She loves to dance just in gen eral to anything and we started her six weeks ago taking clogging lessons She enjoyed the performance tremendously The crowd of approximately 1180 also included Aiken resident Gladys Stout whose husband the late Sam H Stout was among the Marines who waded into the deadly Japanese reception at Iwo Jima in 1945 I try to hear the Marine Corps band every time it plays here she said after National League pitchers named to this years AllStar team The 1991 NL Cy Young Award winner is part of the starting rota tion of the Atlanta Braves Michael was the Southern Divi Tom Glavine the sions starting first baseman just last month when the South Atlantic League AllStar Game was held at Lake Olm stead Stadium in Augusta Michael was in Augusta last day after the Thursday National League roster was announced The an A League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians were in town for a four game series with the Augusta Michael said its been a good year so far for the Glavine fami ly Instead of feeling jealous Michael sees a positive side in having an older brother whos a star in their shared profession Id have to say it helps me as far as giving me a little bit more recognition Michael said Peo ple know the name and they prob ably take a second look because someone in the family has already reached the major leagues Fans too recognize the Glavine name They see that Toms already made it so they expect me to defi make it or be up there quicker than most guys Michael said But it doesnt bother me It doesnt change the way I play or anything like that The way Michael plays is earn ing him
