others have teaching thrust upon them Then there are people like Nancy Cheatham who sort of back into teaching I never had a burning desire to teach when I was growing up said Ms Cheatham There was nt anything like a passion for teaching I fell in love with teach ing after I started teaching Ms Cheatham is the health occupations teacher at the Aiken County Career Center A relative ly new program health occupa tions has been in place at the cen ter for eight years Not a nursing program health occupation stu dents learn about the health care field in general Their training includes shadowing workers at hospitals day care centers ing homes and doctors offices to name a few Once their classes are completed the students are readi ly employable as certified nurses aides I was working as a nurse when I got a call from Strom Thurmond High School Ms Cheatham said They asked me if I would be interested in teaching a class there so I said I would That phone call resulted in a teaching position She stayed at Strom Thurmond until her move to the Career Center I developed a soft spot for young people she said I want ed to help them That help came with a few surprises for the nurse turned teacher especially when she realized the teacher was about to become a student too It was really rough the first year Ms Cheatham said Most teachers have a degree or a back ground in teaching I didnt I had to take classes to become certified to teach She made it through the first year at Strom Thurmond High School made the transition to the Aiken County Career Center and has been making a difference in the lives of the students since day one student Roberta Williams will attest to that fact I was a troublemaker Miss Williams said Coming to the Career Center was the best deci sion I ever made Now I have a direction and have set some goals and I owe a lot of that to Ms Cheatham She really cares about us Im very proud of the students that come here Ms Cheatham said Im not sure I would have known what I wanted to do at that age The students in her class have the advantage of her experience and her ongoing learning since Ms Cheatham continues to work at University Hospital on regular weekends I feel like Im a better teacher Staff photo by Scott Webster Nancy Cheatham center goes over CPR techniques with students Chris Gratop left and Roberta Williams if I keep up with current technol ogy Ms Cheatham said Then I can come back and impart the knowledge I got over the weekend to my students Is the nurse who backed into the teaching profession happy with her choice to stay Its a wonderful job Absolute ly wonderful Ms Cheatham said as she waved to a couple of stu dents who happened by If I did nt see the fruits of my labors if I didnt see these students being successful I wouldnt do it I am so proud every time I see one of them in the work force especially in the health care field she said as she watched a student hard at work on a project I know this is
