family and friends half a world away she ventured into a new world a world of strange customs and new ways Guided by a match maker the fair maiden found love adventure and a new way of life To most of us such a story sounds like a fairy tale For Victoria Clare it describes her life A native of Izmir Turkey Mrs Clare is now an American citi zen and a resident of Aiken As for the matchmaker part thats true I met my husband through a matchmaker Mrs Clare said The memory still causes her to laugh We were at a party and she kept asking people Dont you think Victoria and George would make a good couple Wouldnt they make a lovely couple I finally let her give me his number just so she would stop The friend must have had some talent for match making because Mrs Clare now has a happy hus band and four handsome children Jeremy Linda Aaron and Coming to America from another country can be somewhat disconcerting depending on the country of origin Coming to the South from Turkey can be a real education A gracious hostess Mrs Clare offers visitors cologne and candy It is customary in Turkey to offer guests candy and cologne for their hands Mrs Clare said If someone comes to your home you get Making a difference Toxic towns Refineries threaten health in California 25e Defense takes over in drug case By CARL LANGLEY Defense lawyers for two men accused by federal prosecutors of being major cocaine merchants were to begin efforts this morn ing to save their clients from potential life sentences Elmore El Mo of Bamberg and Albert Shaw Nelson of Miami are on trial in US Dis Court on an indictment accusing them of involvement in a narcotics sales venture Jerry Screen lawyer and Larry Salley repre senting Nelson lost efforts last week to have the charges thrown out or amended The two lawyers have not indi what their defense strategy will be Screen has said Mont will not testify while Salley is trying to overturn the indict ment on technical grounds US District Judge Charles E Simons Jr has rejected claims that Nelson is a victim of double jeopardy and overruled other motions on grounds that evidence is sufficient to let a jury make the decision Besides and Nelson described as the big fish caught in the net cast by drug investigators there are five other defendants listed on a 1995 indictment They have pleaded guilty and some have joined a long list of drug dealers who have been turned into government witness es by agents with the Orangeburg County Sheriffs Department FBI DBA and IRS Federal prosecutors Marvin Caughman and Terry Wooten assistant US attorneys in the South Carolina district ended the governments case Friday after building a case on eyewitness accounts telephone and financial records Caughman and Wooten head of an organized crime task force ih the US Justice Department pro testimony from drug deal ers about hundreds of thousands Please see DEFENSE page 3A Viewers tune in for Super Bowl ads Newspapers You know the Green Bay Pack ers won the game But who won the war The confrontation in question is the advertising worlds annual battle for viewer attention dur ing the Super Bowl where the audience size is surpassed only by the cost to air the ads Even if you found the game bor ing there were several tles that emerged throughout the broadcast that would keep the ad sawy and certainly rant viewers interested For example Porsche Cadillac Nis san and Pontiac in the Car Wars Pepsi and its Generation Next campaign in the Cola Wars and Budweiser and Miller Lite in the Keg Confrontation USA Today which takes the Super Bowl ad wars very seri gave its Ad Meter award to Pepsi for the fourth consecutive year It preferred Pepsis grizzly bears dancing in a chorus line over all the others Second place went to a Pepsi spot featuring supermodels sipping Pepsi while making googoo eyes at newborn Norman A Nissan spot with pigeons intent on leaving droppings on a fresh ly washed car placed third up and answer the door with a smile on your face In Turkey If you arent smiling it means your guest is not welcome in your home One of Mrs Clares first lessons in southern hos was a prelude to just how different things can be in the South I visited the home of a woman who has since become a very good friend Mrs Clare said She was in the den watching a TV program when I knocked on the door She waved and told me to come in I walked in and sat down My friend was drink ing a soft drink and had yet to offer me anything When I started talking she said Watch this is the good part I felt 1 wasnt welcome so I got up and started to leave She laughed at the recollection My friend thought I was going to the kitchen so she said The Cokes are in the refrigerator Just help yourself What I realized was this was as much a compliment to me as meeting someone at the door and offering them lemon cologne and candy would be in Turkey Through her actions she was telling me I was considered family and I should make myself at home The impact of such an idea is not lost on Mrs Clare Family is important in Turkey Children and the elderly have a special place of honor in every house Please see NATIVE page 3A Staff photo by Victoria Clare holds a book
