chimney Dewain Lang was in inten sive care Wednesday after being charged with burglary and malicious injury to prop erty according to a sheriffs office report EMS and firefighters low ered a rope to Lang after a neighbor alerted by two boys to cries for help called 911 Lang told deputies he goes on the roof of the house to smoke crack and that he dropped his lighter down the chimney and was fairly calm MICHAEL W GIBBONS Law enforcement authorities rang in the New Year quietly as they responded to minimal dis during one of the biggest party nights of the year Lt Michael Frank of the Aiken County Sheriffs Office said officers responded to a total of six traffic stops and acci dents from 7 am on Dec 31 through Jan 1 He could not say how many were alcohol related The major disturbance for the was an armed robbery at a convenience store I would say with the exception of an armed robbery last night at a convenience store overall it has been a fairly quiet New Year Frank said The robbery occurred at the Kwik shop on SC 19 and SC 191 Wednesday night Frank said two men entered the store at about 8 pm The first pulled out a hand gun and demanded money from the clerk The second subject went directly to the stores restroom The first subject received an undisclosed amount of cash from the clerk The clerk was ordered to lie down on the ground and the suspects left the store The first subject is described as a black male between the ages of 18 and 25 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds The second subject is described as a black male between the ages of 18 and 25 and six feet tall Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriffs Office Capt Pete Frommer of the Aiken Department of Public Safe ty said four subjects were brought into headquarters for breathalyzer tests Two of the subjects were DUI The other two subjects who were brought in for testing by the SC Highway Patrol refused to take the test Weve had previous years where weve run many more tests than opponents of the plant have appealed a new state permit but for different reasons Interstate Nuclear Services says the fiveyear permit issued Dec 16 by the Department of Health and Environmental Con trol is too strict Critics however say the state should not have issued a license at all because the operation is in a residential area It probably will be this spring before an administrative judge hears the appeals The Colum bia State reported Wednesday A decision probably would come 45 to 60 days after the hearing The Sierra Club of South Car olina two neighborhood groups and three nearby residents filed the appeals opposing the permit We still feel this facility poses a threat to those neighborhoods said Tom Perlic of the Sierra Club The separate appeals by the Sierra Club and the of Social Services on Sept 16 and shot three caseworkers He fled into nearby woods where police found him the next day He had shot himself in the head Hill is charged with three counts of murder one
