am EOT a hospital spokesman said Boyle was in a very very critical condition By JUDY RICH Staff Reporter Last of two articles The Aiken County School District is one out of 15 of the 93 school districts in the state participating in a pilot program aimed at instruct ing a comprehensive drug education program for stu dents from kindergarten through the 12th grade This year for the first time the State Department of Education is trying to es a teaching program for health involving both the mind and the body said local coordinator John J Boyd who explained the to tal programs name would be Substance Abuse Boyd a former principal of North Augusta Junior High School was named to the post of coordinator of drug education and assistant coordinator of instruction in July The Citadel graduate re his masters degree in administration at the University of SC and his educational career includes 25 years as a secondary ad ministrator in South Caro lina schools Boyd expressed asm over the concept of the plan I think by Christmas time well have a program in the schools we can be proud said Right now plans are under way to hold workshops for teachers who will instruct the new program One is scheduled for North Augusta Sept 24 and a second one at Aiken Junior High Oct 1 He said students would not be issued class texts but teachers would be equipped with guidelines He said the program is broken down into four stages or grade levels ten through the third grade grades four through six sev en through eight and nine through twelve Each division is one of specific teaching and will cover a certain concept with approaches to the prob lem of drugs to come at varying levels he explained For instance for the kindergarten through third grade we have a film of the wolf and three pigs the wolf is smoking and when he goes to blow down their house he finds hes out of wind said Boyd Simple yet with a point the program advances on how drugs affect the body mentally as well as physi cally In the seventh and eighth grades the program will involve attitudes and un Boyd said For the hiph school level the health aspect will give way more or less to sessions both individual and groups with counselors Well begin the in the school as soon as the workshops are over prob ably in the middle of Oc tober said Boyd As Boyd says Im sold on the program and he is quick to point out the pro gram devised is a fine approach noting it is a new method of drug educa tion unlike other drug edu cation methods which main ly create curiosity among students often leading to experimentation As a Staff Reporter Judge James B Morrison who will be presiding in Ai ken County during the October term of General Sessions Court next week has definite opinions on many of the days current news headlines including the Watergate scandal which he unhesitatingly describes as a farce within itself The outspoken 67yearold judge speaking from his Georgetown office said he thinks people ought to get back to work and quit worry ing about Watergate I think Watergate is a farce within itself not a force mind you a farce he said Judge Morrison said the Watergate controversy is undermining the govern ment It is undermining our government and this is not the time to undermine the government no one wants to fight or to work these days they just want to talk about Watergate he said Do you think the nations feelings toward the judicial system have been affected by Watergate I would think so he responded As to the number of law yers involved in the scandal who are now defendants Morrison said it was a mat ter of circumstance and co incidence because of their position An advocate of judicial re form Judge Morrison has served 11 years on the bench Im heading into my 12th 22 years in the South Carolina legisla ture a tenure which span ned eight years in the House Speaker Pro Tempore 194748 and 14 years in the Senate Commenting on the big gest change in the judicial system since his appoint ment to the bench Judge Morrison said his answer would have to bs the deci sion on capital punishment a decision he does not agree with I think the Supreme Aiken has been good to me and my
