chance of showers and warm temperatures be coming chilly later in the week are in the weather forecast for the Aiken area today This mornings heavy fog which slowed traffic to a crawl on major should be in the low 40s Wednesdays and Thursdays in the 50s Fog Causes Wreck SPARTANBURG AP Fog contributed to a traffic pileup on Highway 85 West of here at this morn ing injuring six persons and involving 12 vehicles The wreck began when a loaded with beer struck the rear of a car on the fog shrouded road The truck swerved across the median and into oncoming traffic Cars and another truck in the North and South bound lanes of the interstate high way began jamming brakes and colliding Fire broke out hi one of the autos struck by the beer truck and it another car and the truck burned and deals ever made in the city of Aiken was concluded here Friday with the purchase of Mitchell Shopping Center by Simons Morris Asso Developing Company for nearly million Simons and Morris now have a virtual monopoly on Aiken shopping centers The firm was the major devel oper of Kalmia Plaza Shop ping Center The company purchased the 20acre Shopping Center from J Howard Mitchell of Aiken It is located on both sides of SC Highway 19 diagonally across from Vir ginia Acres Park The devel opers Dr James E Simons and Harold Morris have been associated in the land commercial development business since 1965 They nor Mitchell would divulge the exact cost of the shopping center But the realtor of the land deal Mrs Cecil I Harte of Harte Realty Co in Aiken said it was very close to mil lion Simons and Morris also have interests in the Ra mada Inn development on US Highway 1 and another motel in Anderson Morris said Friday he and his partner made the pur chase because South Aiken is beginning to grow and cited the new Aiken By Pass as one of the reasons for this At present the shopping center has a Whites Depart ment Store Edwards Eck erds Drugs Big Star Food Store Food Store bank branches laundromat cleaners carpet shop bou tique sandwich shops ot fices and other shops Most of the shopping cen ter is on the west side of the highway but the 8 acres of the development is on the east side and Sears are located on this side The developers plan to keep the name of the shop ping center and will add on more of the same type of commercial development to it Morris said the com pany would know by January what would go into the ex shopping center 2 Groups Seek To Raise Funds Contributions are being sought for two worthy causes in Aiken County at Christmastime this year The planning con ference this week in New Or leans The purpose of the confab is to find solutions to problems of local governments which are involved in inter state planning groups The announcement was made today that Murphy and Cullinan will leave for New Orleans i Wednesday evening They have been advised to go with an open mind on inter state councils of governments In other commissioner action today Area 1 Commissioner Jo Ann Price announced that the boards clerk Mrs Josie Wertz has resigned from her position Mrs Wertz was appointed just last Tuesday and the board according to Mrs Price has some replacements in mind but hasnt made a definite choice yet An unanticipated work load was given as Mrs Wertzs rea son for resigning She is already the secretary for the county supervisors of fice cut off federal grants and aid to Aiken County j unless it joined the interstate I planning agency Lowery in his statement to day called for the new Aiken County Delegation to lead the I election reform movement in Columbia which would re move among other things the opportunity for arbitrary and sometimes unpredictable rul ings by the remote State Elec tion Commission Lowery deplored the state Election Commission hearing held last a week ago which re affirmed Mrs elec tion He complained that it was held without the presence of the principals involved in the dispute from Aiken County Nor did the commission request their presence said Lowery Lowerys concession comes after nearly a month of local and state Election Commis sion hearings over his elec tion protest which he filed against the invalidation of contested ballots Mrs Rudnick today said she was very pleased to accept her opponents concession She said she holds no animo sity towards him nor his sup porters and plans to work with him his supporters and all the people of Aiken Coun ty Lowerys decision makes Mrs 13vote margin of victory the end result of the long election dispute Last week the county Elec I tion Commission had counted 7 more contested ballots ac cording to an order from the state commission That count lead to no change in the 13 vote margin In conceding the election Lowery cited the great need for election law reform and clarification He called it ironic that the seven votes counted last Thursday were not the chal ballots that he and his attorney Glenn Smith were trying to get validated It was the 22 contested bal lots that lacked the birthdate of I the voter which he wanted opened and counted I know my Democratic col I leagues share with me and my fellow Republicans the view I that each voter who has a va i lid registration certificate I should be allowed to have his j vote counted said Lowery Or second best he added as them that a serious at I tempt be made to determine why his name has been re moved from the voter list
