venturesome trip through Lavaca Bay Monday when they became ded in Matagorda Ship Channel and spent some long cold hours on water Advocate Photo By HENKY WOLFF JR Advocate Slaff Writer Four Victoria thc dog put on their and headed for the beach early Monday after- noon About p.m three of the youths Hull Miller and Tom Bennett and the dog drifted ashore in the small raft at new Central Power Light Co plant at Point Comfort while the younger member of the parly wailed patiently for about two more hours for the Coast Guard lo pick him up on an oil platform in the bay Sunburned hungry and cold but otherwise in good spirits the boys had completed an adventure lhat they will remember for a long lime but nol one they care lo go through again All four said Tuesday hey are not in any hurry to get back to beach Thc adventure began about 1 p.m when Delbert and Johnny with Baron for company rode the two-man raft to an island aboul two miles offshore With Johnny nnd Baron staying behind returned fo the beach and accompanied by William towed Tommy to the island on an air tied to the raft Their problems began as back toward shore after spending some lime on the island With Tommy Johnny and Baron in the rafl and and William on the air mattress everything was fine until the tide came in and current began to sweep thc small boat air mattress four boys and dog toward the shore about 10 miles away at Port Lavaca and Point Comfort Near an oil platform Johnny jumped out in an attempt lo bring the rafl lo platform but the raft kept going wilh Johnny remaining behind The boys estimated thai il was about p.m when happened I hollered and told Johnny lo stay on recalls The three boys remaining on the boat tried un- successfully several times after that lo land on one of thc many sandbars along the channel but each time as hey neared their destination straining on two small aluminum paddles tiie current swept them back out lo sea Their problems were compounded by water gelling into the heavily loaded raft in which the three boys and dog were now huddled together Letting Baron swim on his leash the three dumped the water from the rail in water over their heads hut also lost their shoes and canteens in he process Baron was good about thc whole said adding Ihal after the sun went down and it began to get cold thc dog's body heat contributed a lillle warmth to the three shivering huddled in the tiny boat By boys had decided lo make thc most of it and let the boat wherever the current would take it Meanwhile back at thc platform Johnny was con- whether or nol he should try lo swim to shore but the rough cold water pushed these thoughts from his mind Johnny had not ealen since breakfast but he said thai didn't worry me very much He was more intent on getting someone to pick him up and finally after Sec YOUTHS Page ISA
