The Byrd News Group is based in Winchester, Virginia and it can be described in one way as a list of papers:
But a list of papers would be a superficial look at one hundred year plus saga of newspaper activities in the Byrd family.
Looking way back, there was William Byrd, who was born in Winchester before the Civil War, yet worked as a Texas newspaper editor on the Austin Gazette until he became a colonel for the South during the war and returned penniless to Winchester.
His son Richard Byrd became co-owner of the Winchester Times, and also ran the “Star” which the family purchased in 1897. That paper nearly foundered due to lack of funds to pay for paper, but grandson Harry F. Byrd negotiated to pay cash for paper stock every day until the Star could get back in the black.
The rest of the story would fill a book, since it includes Paris dreams, Byrds in public office, world wars, and a long history of adding papers to the group. For more of the story, see
